Is Aaron Judge the next Babe Ruth?

New York Yankee outfielder Aaron Judge’s superhuman power display has looked eerily similar to another pinstripe legend, Babe Ruth. Judge led Major League Baseball in home runs as a rookie last year, and he continued to improve as a hitter this year. However, baseball is a cruel mistress when it comes to cold bats, and Ruth’s mythological stature in baseball makes it nearly impossible for anyone to top him. What do you think? ⚾

Judge is larger than life—almost literally. Standing at 6'7" and weighing 282 pounds, Judge lit up the league like few rookies before. Look at these numbers for his rookie year: 52 home runs, 114 RBIs and drawing 127 walks. Judge crushed his rookie year and is still crushing balls this year. And he’s only 26. Judge is well on his way to being the modern-day Babe Ruth the way he wrecks the ball.

With a couple of playoff appearances, his smooth swing will create just as many legendary moments as the Babe himself. Don’t worry about this kid. He is the next Babe Ruth.

Judge may have the swing, but that doesn’t mean he can’t lose it. Baseball is cruel like that. Judge smashed the rookie home run record, but he could easily fall into obscurity if his swing betrays him. He could end up like Boston Red Sox player Walt Dropo who fell off the map after belting 34 home runs and batting .322 his rookie year.

Other power rookie sensations like Mark Trumbo, Tim Salmon and Ryan Braun have gone to have impressive careers, but nothing quite like Ruth. Judge might go dinger for dinger, but the beauty of the Babe was that he had a larger than life personality to go along with those homers. Unless Judge can continue his hot streak while eating hot dogs, drinking beer and calling home run shots, he will never be as legendary as Babe Ruth.
