Worst NBA scandal: Donald Sterling or Tim Donaghy?
You have to wonder why a man who hates people of color decided to own a team in a sport where 75 percent of the players are Black. Donald Sterling's checkered past with race came to a very public conclusion when his girlfriend released a tape of a racist rant.
In the tape, Sterling admonishes her for associating with people of color, even specifically mentioning Magic Johnson. The backlash was considerable. Players, coaches, and other owners condemned the rant. Sterling was forced to sell the team and received a lifetime ban from the NBA.
Gambling has given basketball a lot of trouble, but magically, it never seemed to touch the NBA—or so people thought. Former referee Tim Donaghy admitted to betting on games he officiated and called the games according to how he bet.
What the Chicago Black Sox did in 1919 was pretty bad, but to have an official whose job it is to manage the game, and have the fate of two teams in their whistles is a more heinous act. His alleged transgressions tarnished the NBA and confirmed, in the minds of same fans, the game is rigged. Donaghy's confession could have killed the NBA.
