Worst baseball scandal: The Black Sox or Pete Rose?
Looking for an edge to win against an opponent is just a part of the game. But losing on purpose? That violates sports in the most disgraceful way. The spirit of sport is to compete to the best of your ability against someone with similar desires to see who's better. Throwing games, especially in the World freaking Series, damages the integrity of the sport, and the Black Sox nearly destroyed the sport.
The Black Sox almost destroyed a league, and for what? A couple of dollars? There has never been, nor will there ever be a bigger scandal than eight lifetime bans to players who were involved in a plot to throw a championship series.
"Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year. Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible."
How hard is it to follow that, Pete? Not only did he bet on baseball, he bet on it when he was managing. He could have easily controlled the outcome of a game based on who he bet on. You want to talk about ruining the integrity of the game? Charlie Hustle did the most damage ever.
