Both LeBron James and Kevin Durant have a lot riding on the NBA Finals. James is considered one of the best to ever play the game, but will still be considered a step below Michael Jordan unless he wins more championships. Durant is the ultimate “yeah, but” playersuperstar talent, but will ultimately on the outside looking in without a championship ring. Who has more to lose? 🏀 💍

LeBron James fighting for a legacy is like a man who can bench press 1,000 poundseven if he doesn’t break the world record of 1,075, he will still be considered one of the greatest. Kevin Durant, on the other hand, is trying to put up 185.

Kevin Durant is one of the best players in the NBA, winning an MVP award in 2014 and is the youngest regular season scoring champion in NBA history. However, those achievements won’t mean much without an NBA title. Just ask Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone and Allen Iversonall great players, but whose legacies will always be stained with the lack of an NBA championship.

The former Texas Longhorn left the Oklahoma City Thunder for Golden State so that he could build a legendary resume with an NBA title. He was already looked at as weak for running to a conference rival to chase a ring, but if he fails to accomplish that goal, his reputation might never recover. Durant needs this ring to justify his decision to leave, and catapult him out of the leper colony of “yeah, but” superstars.

Unlike LeBron James, Kevin Durant’s legacy hinges on a championship. James already has three to lean on, but without one, Durant will always be dismissed as just a superstarnot a legend.

There is no more scrutinized player than LeBron James. Three championships and four MVPs would be a legendary career for any other player, but James is chasing the ghost of the G.O.A.T.

When you come out of high school as hyped and talented as James, anything less than Michael Jordan’s championship tally is considered a failure. No matter what James has or will accomplish, everything will inevitably come back to how many NBA titles James has won. Fair or unfair, that is reality.

Durant is fighting for his first championship, a difficult task. However, it's even more difficult to reach the top, and stay there. Taking every team’s best shot, and withstanding all the criticism is the monumental assignment James endures despite an already successful career.

If James fails to get this ring, it’ll be another chance for detractors to say he’s not as good as Jordan. And after 13 seasons of playing, there is no guarantee James’ body won’t breakdown at any time. Every year is a race against the ghost (and the clock) to prove he is the best to ever play. One missed opportunity could mean the end of that pursuit for James.
