Who's the biggest bust in NBA Draft history: Greg Oden or Anthony Bennett?

The NBA Draft sometimes provides teams with franchise players who can turnaround the fortunes of an entire organization. However, players often flame out, failing to live up to expectations. Greg Oden was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007, and only played 105 games in six seasons. Anthony Bennett was selected with the top pick in 2013, and played four unproductive seasons before being banished from the league. Who was the biggest bust? 🏀

Standing at 7'0" and weighing 250-pounds as a 19-year-old, Greg Oden was supposed to be the next great NBA big man. Seven years after he was drafted, Oden is not great, nor is he in the NBA.

To be fair to Oden, it wasn’t his talent that failed himit was his body. Even before he played a minute of NBA basketball, his rookie season was lost after microfracture surgery on his right knee. It only went downhill from there, as Oden would continue to fight foot and knee problems for the rest of his NBA tenure, finishing his career with three microfracture surgeries, two arthroscopic surgeries and knee procedure to repair a fractured patella.

After being drummed out of the NBA, Oden tried to play in China, but was cut after one year. He finished his career averaging eight points and 6.2 rebounds in 105 games.

Anthony Bennett didn’t come in with the hype Greg Oden did, but a No. 1 draft pick still has a lot of expectations. They are supposed change franchise fortunes, or at least play at an All-Star level. Bennett did neither.

In 2013, he was supposed to be the piece who made the Cleveland Cavaliers competitive after the departure of LeBron James. Instead, he averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, shooting 35.6 percent from the field. Greg Oden could at least blame his bust label on his health. Anthony Bennett was just not a good basketball player.

It only took four years before Bennett’s NBA options ran out. He is currently playing in Turkey after averaging 4.4 points and 3.1 rebounds for his NBA career.
