Should the Washington Redskins change their name? | The Tylt
For years, activists have demanded the Washington Redskins change their name due to the racial implications of both the name and the team's mascot. The term “redskin” is a derogatory term meant to denigrate Native Americans and has no place in football. The team’s fans and owner want to keep the name because it’s a traditional name of a proud franchise. What do you think? 🏈

The term "redskin" was used in the 1800s as a way of identifying and eventually ostracizing Native Americans. Why would a $2.85 billion organization want to associate their brand with that term?
The "Change the Mascot" campaign has been working for YEARS to get the controversial Redskins namesake removed from American culture. Here's a press release detailing the campaign's demands from 2014.
Jared has some suggestions on the name change.
Would it be hard to change our name to the "Warriors"? Or a tribe that populates DC/Washington heavily? The Washington Cherokee?

Some people find "redskin" offensive, but did they know the term may have come from a Native American? According to the Washington Post, a British lieutenant colonel translated a letter from Chief Mosquito, referring to other Native Americans as "redskins."
Before they were the Washington Redskins, they were the Boston Braves. Ownership changed the name to "redskins" to honor William “Lone Star” Dietz, who identified himself as a Sioux, and other Native Americans on the team. The franchise is filled with respect, and the team should keep the name.
You want to talk numbers? A poll by the Washington Post that surveyed 504 Native Americans across the country, over the phone, showed dramatically different results from the Survey Monkey poll. 9 out of 10 Native Americans say they are NOT offended by the term "redskin."
Take that, Vincent Schilling.
In a finding that backs Snyder's assertion, WaPo poll finds 9 in 10 Native Americans don't find "Redskins" offensive https://t.co/M3jH1251VK
