Should Derrick Rose be celebrated despite sexual assault charges?

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Derrick Rose dropped a career-high 50 points in a victory against the Utah Jazz. Many players and fans celebrated the return of an athlete who used to be one of the most gifted players in the league—before a rash of injuries nearly derailed his career. However, others caution against being too congratulatory, especially with a gang rape accusation that appears to be resurfacing. Alleged assaulters shouldn't be given a platform. It's been eight long years since Derrick Rose became the youngest NBA MVP in the history of the league. What has happened since has been a lot of injuries, surgeries, the decline of his game, and a sexual assault allegation he was found not liable for.

Life hasn't been too kind to Rose, but that 50-point game was the culmination of all of the hard work he has done to get back the same level he once played at. That kind of grit and toughness should be celebrated.

Sexual assaults, alleged or not, should not be forgotten—especially when it's just a man scoring a lot of points on a basketball. While he was found not liable in a 2016 sexual assault case, his testimony was eye-opening. He couldn't define what "consent" was and brought up the accusers sexual history to ruin her reputation.

The case is also in the process of being appealed and Rose's toxic statements are an indication that this isn't the best guy to support. People need to reconsider celebrating anything this man does.
