Who had the biggest choke: 2019 Tampa Bay Lightning or 2016 Golden State Warriors?

The Tampa Bay Lightning won a record 62 games in the regular season. Too bad those wins don't translate to the playoffs where they failed to win a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, getting swept out of the postseason. Many are calling this one of the biggest chokes in sports history. Others point to the infamous 2016 NBA Finals where a 73-win Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead to lose to the Cleveland Cavaliers. What was the bigger choke? 🏒🏀

The curse of high expectations has taken another victim. From the 2001 Seattle Mariners to the 2007 New England Patriots, record-setting teams often fail to cap off their seasons with a championship, but at least they won a game in the playoffs. Tampa Bay did not even get that far.

The Lightning tied an NHL record-winning 62 games, but failed to notch a victory in the postseason as they were swept by a feisty Columbus Blue Jackets team. Say what you will about the Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead in a championship round, but at least they won games to get there. The Lightning couldn't even make it out of the opening round.

That kind of incompetence deserves the special distinction of being the biggest choke ever.

You can't be the biggest choke in sports if people aren't even aware of it. No offense to hockey, but it didn't even crack the top four in most popular sports to watch in the United States according to a Gallup Poll. When the Warriors went up 3-1 only to collapse against the LeBron James–led Cavaliers, everyone knew about it. It was so well known, it became a landmark cultural event.

Golden State won the most games in NBA regular season history and was making a case to be the greatest team of all time. All they had to do was win the NBA championship. Still, in three games, the mighty Warriors floundered and fell apart. Memes were made, Twitter was on fire and all anyone could talk about was the choke.

Even now, blowing a 3-1 lead is still topping comment sections on Instagram and Twitter. There is no more iconic choke than the Warriors.
