What's the correct term: soccer or football?

Even though it's the most popular sport in the world, not everyone can agree on what to call the competition involving 24 players, two teams, two goals and one ball. Some call it "soccer" because it is the short version of "Association Football," the official sports name of the modern game started in 19th century England. Others call it "football," which makes sense because it is almost exclusively played using your feet. What is the right term? ⚽

People hate on the United States calling the sport "soccer" when it's actually a British term. And the U.S. isn't the only country that uses a term other than football. Australia and New Zealand are also countries that use soccer. And other areas like Japan, Southeast Asia, Korea and South Africa have a different name for the most popular sport in the world.

Soccer is a global term and the correct one to use.

Here is an excerpt from Daniel Gooch's rant on Bleacher Report about football vs. soccer:

Why is it that Americans have another sport called football where the players rarely use there foot. Whereas in the english football, the majority of the games are played by kicking the ball with your FOOT...
I can't count the number of times I have been speaking to an American and felt the erge bang their head against the wall so it gets into there head that they are wrong.
If you are an American it is time to put your burger down and change your ways. Ok, you can call 'your' sport football, but when it comes to 'our' football, don't call it soccer!
