Some of the most skilled athletes in the world play soccer or basketball, but sometimes otherworldly skills aren’t enough. Players of both sports employ flopping, which according to many is an unsportsmanlike tactic used by cowards. Soccer has a notorious reputation for giving the impression that any contact is somehow a life-threatening injury, but basketball players are giving soccer athletes a run for their money with some egregious acting of their own. What do you think? ⚽ 🏀

Basketball was defined as a sport of toughness. Being labeled a flopper used to be a damning thing, but now dishonesty is being rewarded consistently. There isn’t a game where an NBA player doesn’t flail his arms like he was hit by a semi-truck, or snap his head back and forth like he’s in a Willow Smith song.

Floppings infiltration of the sport has made an otherwise fast-paced game devoid of rhythm, and unwatchable. It has historically been associated with soccer, but floppings prevalence on the basketball hardwood may be on its way to eclipsing its existence on the pitch.

If you’re looking for a sport of floppers, it doesn’t get any worse than soccer. In sports, people jokingly say, “you can tap that guy, and he’ll fall over.” Soccer is where that statement is consistently true.

Flopping is ingrained in the sport’s culture, and it’s not hard to see why. If you feign an injury while having a lead late in the game, you run time off the clock and stop any momentum the opponent has. Need a goal chance, just flail while you’re in the goalie box to get a penalty kick.

Still, that kind of deception ruins what is an otherwise beautiful game. While soccer is the most popular sport in the world, flopping is the black eye that won’t go away.

And the Razzie Award for worst actor goes to...

At least give some effort to make it look realistic.
