Should the Cleveland Cavaliers trade for Paul George?

Paul George informed the Indiana Pacers he intends to leave the team in free agency next year, according to Yahoo Sports. The move opens a potential and intriguing trade deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs were helpless against the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals, and could use another All-Star to take them back to the promised land. However, George reportedly says Los Angeles is his preferred destination, and trading for him would essentially be a one year rental. What do you think? 🏀

Even with the best player in the LeBron James, the Cleveland Cavaliers were helpless against the supernova star power of the Golden State Warriors. With the gap widening between the Warriors and the rest of the NBA, the Cavs need to go all-in to catch up. Paul George would be a perfect fit.

Not only can George score and create for others, he is regarded as one of the best defensive players in the NBA, frequently matching up against LeBron James in their Eastern Conference battles. An All-Star with that much talent would help negate Kevin Durant, and give the Cavs their best chance of winning another title.

With reports circulating about George’s intentions, the Pacers have lost a lot of their leverage in any trade involving their All-Star forward. The Cavs could get him relatively cheap, and immediately contend for a championship. Sure, it might only be for one year, but at least it’ll be a championship year. And if he gets a taste of the Finals, he might be less inclined to leave for a non-contending team.

Paul George is the star the Cleveland Cavaliers need, but what good will he be if he only sticks around for one year? The Golden State Warriors' core looks like they’ll be together for a while, so George will need to commit to the Cavs or move on.

As soon as reports were made of George’s preference towards Los Angeles, every team should take a step back when attempting to acquire the 27-year-old forward. George has a star work ethic, but his lack of commitment to any team not named the Lakers will hang like the cloud over any trade destination. That will become a distraction, even to a tight team like the Cavs.

George should be with a team he wants to play for. The Cavaliers are not that team.
