Should MLS implement a promotion/relegation system?

Major League Soccer rejected a $4 billion television deal because it had a stipulation requiring the league to go to a promotion/relegation system, wherein the worst teams from MLS would be demoted to a lesser league, while the best teams from lesser leagues join MLS. The league may want to reconsider because $4 billion is a lot of coin for owners to turn down. However, soccer is not popular enough to sustain a promotion/relegation systemeven with all that money. What do you think?

$4 BILLION. For a league that is struggling for money, it's really curious why MLS would not accept a deal that would give league executives the cash they have been searching for since the league was created. This deal is what MLS needs to be considered a serious football league.

Every other professional soccer league in the world runs a relegation/promotion system. This system is more exciting as even the worse teams in the top league have something to play for. With a better product and more money to attract better talent, there is no downside to going to relegation/promotion system.

In theory, a relegation/promotion system for MLS would be wonderful. But this is the real world, and even with a $4 billion dollars, Major League Soccer would not be able to save itself when fans still don't go to games.

Soccer has a passionate following in the United States, but it's still tiny compared to the rest of the professional sports leagues in the country. Most markets still have trouble filling seats, and putting in a relegation system would doom a lot of those markets if a team was sent down to a lower league.

If any of the big markets like Los Angeles or New York were sent down, MLS would lose boatloads of money. Implementing a relegation system would destroy the league.
