What would you rather watch: the Scripps National Spelling Bee or soccer?
Anyone who thinks the Scripps National Spelling Bee isn't a sport isn't paying attention. These kids go through years and years of preparation, studying word origins, roots and alternate definitions. All of that work culminates in an appearance at the national competition where all eyes are on them alone on the stage.
When they succeed, there's nothing like the genuine joy of getting a word right. When they fail, there are few things more devastating. That's entertainment that flopping soccer players can't bring.
Spelling isn't a sport. Unless these kids are nutmegging their way across a field or making incredible diving saves while enunciating syllables, what they are doing isn't worth putting on ESPN—A SPORTS CHANNEL.
Soccer has its problems but at least it's an actual sport.
