The average running back's career length is about 2.5 years. The Panthers' Christian McCaffrey is anything but average.

A lot of people feared the Stanford running back wouldn't be able to stand the rigors of being an every-down back in the NFL. After piling up at least 1000 yards from scrimmage every year, leading the league in touches, scrimmage yards and total touchdowns in 2019, he has put those concerns to rest. Not only is he a threat between and outside of the tackles, but he can also catch the out of the backfield and split out wide.

Not every running back deserves $16 million a year, but McCaffrey's versatility proves he does.

Tylt sports editor Dan Tran talks with former NFL players about playing through pain and when the aches outweigh the glory.

In a passing league and two-back rotations, there is no need to spend that kind of money on a running back. In the current era, quarterbacks are much more important to a team's success than a running back. There hasn't been a top back who has led a team to the Super Bowl since Marshawn Lynch in during the 2013 season and he was only getting $7 million.

There is no doubt McCaffrey is one of the best running backs in the NFL, but giving him or any running back that much money is only going to handicap a team.
