Which third baseman truly deserved a big contract: Nolan Arenado or Manny Machado? | The Tylt
Days after Manny Machado was handed the richest free agent contract ever from the San Diego Padres, the Colorado Rockies made Nolan Arenado the highest-paid position player per-year in the MLB, with a new contract reportedly worth $255 million over eight years. Many are saying Arenado deserves the big contract because he's better than Machado. Others think Machado is the superior player. What do you think? ⚾
Which third baseman truly deserved a big contract: Nolan Arenado or Manny Machado?
Manny Machado has a nice bat, but he doesn't give the consistent effort that Arenado does. That reliability means something.
In terms of offensive numbers, Arenado has higher slash numbers. And for how much crap he takes for playing a mile above sea level, he has a better OPS than Machado too. Arenado also has six Gold Gloves in all six years of his career. Machado has two Gold Gloves, which is impressive, but when it comes to determining the best, every bit of hardware counts.
Arenado deserves to be the highest-paid position player per year because he's the best.
There's a reason Manny Machado got $300 million. He's the best.
Nolan Arenado might be getting paid the most per year, but Machado is the man at third base. Arenado might have big numbers, but that comes from playing in Colorado where the air is thinner. Machado averages similar numbers without that edge.
Don't let that new contract distract from the fact that Machado is the better third baseman.
