For 43 seasons, the Capitals watched from afar as team after team hoisted the Stanley Cup. Even drafting one of the greatest scorers in NHL history didn't end the drought.

That's when 2018 happened. Alex Ovechkin led the Caps to the franchise's first Stanley Cup win and brought Washington D.C. its first major championship since 1992. Victory should always be the best story of the year.

Expansion teams usually start the season with a group of rejects and end with those same rejects watching the playoffs at home. The Vegas Golden Knights were not supposed to make an impact in the NHL but won their way into every hockey fan's heart by grinding out win after win—despite only having one former All-Star in James Neal and Marc-Andre Fleury as a former Cup winner.

No one expected the Golden Knights to do anything, and all they did was make it to the Stanley Cup Final. That is one hell of a story.
