Does Roger Goodell deserve a contract extension from the NFL?
When it comes to business, the name of the game is making money. With Roger Goodell at the helm of the NFL, business is booming.
Since Goodell took over as commissioner in 2006, the league has continued to grow, making more money year to year. In 2005, the league generated $6.16 billion. In 2016, the league is made over $14 billion according to MSN. Goodell has masterfully negotiated television contracts and is growing the game internationally to expand the league's reach. Whether everyone hates him or not, he has been responsible for record revenue numbers and leading the NFL to new heights. He deserves an extension.
If you think money is the only metric to measure someone's worth, you're wrong. There is the right way to run a company, and Roger Goodell has been awful at the personal side of the business.
Human beings work in the NFL. As much as people want to dehumanize players as entertaining hitting machines, they need to be taken care of by their employer. Instead, the league dragged its feet dealing the with concussion issue, putting its players in danger. Goodell's track record disciplining the players has been inconsistent at best. He was at the helm when Ray Rice and Josh Brown initially got light suspensions for domestic abuse. That kind of behavior hurts the brands and contributes to declining viewership.
