Imagine you have a lottery ticket that could make you a millionaire. Then, you break your leg, can't make it to the claim office and every day you don't, a chunk of that money is taken away. That is what potentially could happen with top NFL prospects in minor bowl games.
These players stand to make a lot of money at the next level. They need to maximize that earning potential and getting injured in a meaningless bowl game is not going to help them. The NFL is business, and they need to look out for themselves since no one else will. Skipping bowl games to prepare for the NFL is a smart decision.
There is no sugar coating when it comes to players who skip bowl games to prepare for the NFL—it's selfish. You are putting your needs in front of the brothers you have fought side-by-side with for three or four years. Players who skip bowl game are abandoning teams when they have a chance to end their college careers on a high note, standing in the trenches with their teammates one last time. But instead, they are taking it easy and thinking about themselves instead of others.
