Legendary NFL running Barry Sanders turned 50 years old, and everyone was quick to celebrate one of the greatest running backs of all time. But was Sanders the best back in the '90s? Sanders is second in all-time yards per carry and holds the record for most consecutive years with over 1,100 rushing yards. Still, Emmitt Smith holds the record for most career rushing yards and leads all running backs with 164 rushing touchdowns. Who was the best running back only '90s kids will remember?

There were elusive backs before Sanders touched an NFL field, but there was no one who could find a way to explode out of an impossible jam quite like him. Emmitt Smith had the luxury of having Hall of Famers backing him up. Sanders was basically the entire the Lions offense and carried the team game in and game out. Put Sanders on even a half complete team, and he takes the roster to the playoffs every year.

Having great teammates is one thing, performing at a Hall of Fame level yourself is another. Smith may have had Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin, but he proved he was a force by himself. There are plenty of players who could've benefited from having great talent around them, but Smith was one of the few who flourished even without help. He was the better running back and the numbers show it.
