Is Drew Brees a generational talent or just a system quarterback?

New Orleans rejoiced as their longtime quarterback Drew Brees broke the all-time passing record, moving ahead of Peyton Manning with 72,103 career yards. Brees has no doubt impacted the NFL, showing that small quarterbacks can dominate the league, but is he just a product of a perfect system? Many feel Brees would have flourished anywhere. Others think he flourished in a perfect situation and there's nothing wrong with that. What do you think? 🏈

It took Drew Brees 18 seasons to break the all-time passing yards record, but it didn't come easy. Many wrote him off because he is relatively shorter than a "prototypical" quarterback. He also had to recover from major shoulder surgery. But even with all of that, he has been a pillar for New Orleans when the franchise needed him most and became one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

But would he have gotten there under any circumstances, or did he need to the perfect system to flourish?

People doubted Brees' potential at the next level coming out of college. He proved them wrong. They said the Texas native was too short to be a star. He proved them wrong. They said he would never come back the same after major shoulder surgery. He proved them wrong.

Brees has made a career of making doubters look like fools and he would've done that anywhere. Yes, Sean Peyton and his system have been helpful in showing the greatness of the former Purdue quarterback, but his competitive nature, arm talent and ability to scramble to extend plays would have made him great on any team. Brees is no system quarterback. He is the best quarterback.

Brees is no doubt one of the best quarterbacks ever, but to say he hasn't been a product of the perfect system would be naive. Brees was improving every year in San Diego, but his career really took off after he was put in Sean Peyton's pass-happy offense in New Orleans. That's where Brees ended every year with more than 4,000 passing yards each season. Those kinds of opportunities only come in Peyton's system.

People seem to think it's a bad thing. It's actually the opposite. He found the perfect fit and success came with some help. Brees being a system quarterback shouldn't be an insult.
