Upsets put the "Madness" in March Madness. Without them, there would be less excitement in the NCAA Tournament and everyone's bracket would be perfect. Thank goodness for Cinderella stories. But which upset was bigger? UMBC shocked the world by becoming the first 16-seed a No. 1 seed in 2016. Still, that was just one game, while George Mason made it to the 2006 Final Four as an 11-seed. What do you think? 🏀

A 16-seed beating a No. 1 seed was right up there with hell freezing over, pigs flying, and Tristan Thompson staying faithful in a relationship. Good thing no one told UMBC that.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County had a total enrollment of around 11,000 in 2018, but picked up a few million fans when they dominated No. 1 Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Everyone was expecting the Cavaliers to mount a comeback, but one of the best team's in the country never recovered. The Retrievers shocked the world with a 74-54 win, becoming the first 16-seed to beat a top seed.

When you're the first to pull that off, there is no upset that's better.

UMBC might have pulled off a huge upset, but anyone can get lucky once. George Mason didn't get lucky in 2006. The school pulled upset after upset to prove they belonged on the biggest stage of the NCAA Tournament.

The Colonials ran through the competition reads like a hit list targeting the most prestigious programs in the country. It started with an improbable win against Michigan State, which was then followed up a close win against North Carolina. Wichita State was the next victim in the Sweet 16, but nothing will ever top their two-point win against UConn, which propelled George Mason to the Final Four—the first double-digit seed to reach those heights in the tournament's history.

Winning a game is one thing. George Mason conquered a region. That is why they were the bigger upset.
