Are NCAA athletes actually slaves?

The recent NCAA corruption scandal has rocked the organization to its core. Former players, like Jalen Rose, likened athletes to indentured servants and some have even gone as far as to call it slavery. It's not hard to make the comparison since athletes are not compensated fairly for their labor. But these athletes are students who have the freedom to walk away at any time. They don't have to participate if they don't want to. What do you think? 🏀 🏈

Name a system where large entities make large amounts of money off the free labor of someone else. Yeah, it is slavery, but it's also playing sports in the NCAA. Athletes put in professional-level hours to perform for their schools only to get compensated for tuition and housing.

Meanwhile, schools and the NCAA are making millions of dollars in advertising, television contracts, and jersey sales. The athletes get a pat on the back and are rewarded with exposure. Just because they are "paid" in tuition doesn't mean they aren't being taken advantage of. For some of these kids, college is the only option they have, so they are forced to go into a system to be treated this way.

If it smells and sounds like slavery, it probably is.

Comparing what NCAA athletes do to slavery is disrespectful to actual slaves who actually lived through the horrors of the system. No matter how you cut it, these athletes have a choice to participate in sports. They can walk away whenever they want if they feel that it is unfair. Slaves never had the chance to do that.

College athletes still get educated through the scholarships they receive and set themselves up for a brighter future. To compare college athletics to slavery is not only inaccurate but an insult to what actual slaves went through. Student-athletes are not slaves.
