Has Kevin Durant surpassed LeBron James as the best player in the NBA?
To be the best, you must beat the best, and Kevin Durant has done plenty of that the last couple of seasons. LeBron James might have been the top player in the NBA in the past, but King James should relinquish that crown after Durant’s performance in recent years.
You know who he is. This is a guy who talks the talk, then walks the walk. He is a walking bucket, scoring at will from every spot on the court with a seven-foot frame and an unblockable shot. Plus, he's four years younger than James and Father Time is undefeated.
This is when the best separate themselves from the pack. He has been the most dominant player on one of the best teams in the NBA the last few years, racking up NBA titles, while James has been caught in his wake. Durant’s performance in the biggest moments of the NBA season have not only won games, but have also propelled him over LeBron James for the title of best player in the league.
Durant benefits from having more help than the slacker in a group project, and he's being called the best player in the NBA? James doesn’t have the luxury of having three other All-Star players, including one MVP, to lean on when things get tough. He has done most of the heavy lifting as both the best offensive and defensive player on a lot of his teams.
People love to say "unstoppable" when it comes to Durant's game, but have you seen anyone stop James when puts his head down and rumbles to the basket? Ever see someone stand him up when he gets in the post? James is just as unguardable even in his twilight years.
Durant might be in the NBA Playoffs this year while James is at home, but he is a long way from supplanting The King as the NBA’s best player. Durant has help from other stars, but James gets incredible numbers being the primary focus of every defense. Durant proved he couldn’t consistently do the same with Oklahoma City for the last 11 years.
