Philadelphia 76ers forward Ben Simmons is one of the favorites to win the NBA Rookie of the Year despite this being his second year in the league. Since he did not participate in any games his first year, Simmons is considered a rookie by the league. Working out and practicing doesn't make you an NBA player, playing in actual games does, so he's classified correctly. But others feel his second-year status should automatically make him a non-rookie. It's not fair to actual rookies. What do you think? 🏀

The only people complaining about Ben Simmons' status as a rookie are haters. Simmons didn't step on an NBA court as a player until this year. That makes him a rookie.

There's only so much you can learn without actually playing in a game. Practices don't really simulate it and neither does rehab from surgery. Other people are crying about NBA Summer League like it's a true NBA game. Summer league is just a hyped up tryout/interleague scrimmage. That is not real game experience.

Simmons is a rookie whether some fans like it or not.

Simmons may not have played an NBA game last year during his true rookie season, but that year with the 76ers gave him valuable information to process and implement when he finally reached the court. That year of growth and development make all the difference in the world, while real rookies like Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell learn on the fly. That makes Simmons' "rookie" year a sham. Here is former NBA star Richard Jefferson with more:

It’s not Ben’s fault but [Donovan Mitchell] is a TRUE rookie. He didn’t have an entire year to train and practice against NBA talent. He didn’t get to sit on a bench and watch film and dedicate is life to basketball.
