Two weeks after Bubba Wallace successfully lobbied to have the Confederate flag banned from NASCAR events, a noose was found in his garage. For some people, this is just the latest example of NASCAR being an unsafe place for Black people, especially when it is paired with the line of Confederate flags that were planted on the road leading to Talledega. Others think the sport has some bad apples who are spoiling the image of NASCAR, which accepts fans of all races. What do you think? 🏎️

If the Confederate flag has been a staple at your events for decades, it's safe to say you don't have the interest of everyone in mind. NASCAR may have finally banned the rebel banner from its events, but that doesn't mean racism is completely gone. The noose in Bubba Wallace's garage proves that.

It's going to take a while for the sport to deafen the volume of racism that has been going on in the sport for years. To say it is a safe space of Black people would be a massive reach considering the response of some NASCAR fans to the removal of the stars and bars. There may be Black NASCAR fans, but there are too many indications of blatant racism to say they are truly safe at these events.

People have this perception of NASCAR fans as backward hicks when the reality is far from it. Yes, there is some racism at events and the sport hasn't done a great job at rid itself of those bad actors in the past, but a majority of racing fans like people who love racing just as much as they do, regardless of race.

NASCAR has its problems and not all fans are open to accepting people who don't look like them. However, saying that is a majority of the fans is prejudicial and wouldn’t be fair to the millions of racing fans who want to share the love of cars with everyone.

With NASCAR condemning the noose in the garage and banning the Confederate flag, the sport is safe for Black fans to enjoy.
