Nashville may not have been the first to toss a dead sea creature on the ice, but at least that tradition makes sense. Why would an octopus that has no roots in Michigan be an unofficial mascot? At least the catfish has ties to the Nashville region. The octopus is a fun tradition, but it’s become cliché. Despite the smell, the catfish toss is fresher. Keep your octopi at home. Give us a whiskered fish any day.

That’s a cute little tradition you have over there, Nashville. We wonder you where you got that idea? Oh, that’s right – Detroit.

The octopus toss has been the Red Wings tradition since 1952, when a pair of brothers tossed an eight-tentacled creature on the ice to symbolize the eight wins necessary to win the Stanley Cup. The Red Wings would go 8-0 that year en route to a Stanley Cup Championship and win two titles in the next three years. How many have you won, Nashville?

The octopus toss is ingrained in Red Wing and NHL lore. And while we see Nashville in the playoffs periodically, the Red Wings and their octopus will be around far more often.
