Should MLB stop rewarding division winners with automatic playoff berths?
The MLB playoffs are supposed to be a battle between the best teams in the league for the World Series Championship. Supposed to be. Every year, there is at least one team relegated to a wild slot, or left out of the playoff picture altogether, because it had the unfortunate situation of being in a strong division.
The league needs to change to a system where the best teams go to the playoffs. Get rid of the divisions and just have the six teams with the best records from each league make it to the playoff. Let's reward those squads that held it down the entire season.
MLB is a league built on tradition. If you eliminate the divisions, you get rid of some fiery rivalries that have been a staple of the league. Without divisions, fans would not see the Yankees and Red Sox fight as desperately for a shot at the postseason, or the Cardinals and Cubs going run-for-run with a playoff berth hanging in the balance.
Giving an automatic bid for division winners keeps the league intriguing and MLB should continue with this current system of playoff qualification.
