Who is MLB Manager of the Year: Paul Molitor vs. Torey Lovullo?
It usually takes years for a 59-103 team to rise back to prominence, but manager Paul Molitor made it look easy. After a forgettable season in 2016, Molitor guided Minnesota to an unforgettable turnaround, leading the only team to make the playoffs after losing 100 games the previous season.
Molitor is also only the second Hall of Fame player to win Manager of the Year. No other manager has ever led a team from the deepest depths of the loss column to the playoffs, and that's the reason he should be the defacto manager of the year for all of MLB.
Lovullo took over a 69-93 in 2016 and flipped the script in 2017. The Diamondbacks ended the season with a 93-69 record and an NLDS appearance before being knocked out by the eventual National League Champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The 24-game improvement was the largest of the National League in 2017.
Even though Dave Roberts helped the Dodgers reach the World Series, Lovullo easily beat him out with 18 of the 30 first-place votes. That kind of respect is deserving of the title MLB Manager of the Year.
