MLB legend Jackie Robinson would have turned 100 years old in 2019, and many are paying tribute to one of the greatest ever. Robinson was a civil rights icon, color barrier breaker and a military man. if he were a player today, one could argue he would not have turned down an opportunity to visit the White House as he didn't in the past. Though, history shows he challenged authority and probably would not stand to be in the presence of a polarizing figure like Donald Trump. What do you think? ⚾
Would Jackie Robinson visit Donald Trump's White House as a player?
Jackie Robinson knew change wasn't going to come unless he received support from the people in power. He never hesitated to telegram and write to the White House to advocate for civil rights. If he were a player today and had an opportunity to meet President Trump, he would not turn down the chance.
Robinson wrote letters and badgered John F. Kennedy constantly to move civil rights forward. The two met and had a respectful exchange despite being on opposite sides of the political spectrum—Robinson being a Republican and Kennedy a Democrat. Though President Donald Trump has been a controversial figure, the Baseball Hall of Famer would have met with him in order to advance civil rights. He would never run away from a chance to improve the situation of every American!
Donald Trump once called national anthem kneelers "sons of [expletive]." Do you really think he'd get along with Robinson who said, "I cannot stand and sing the anthem. I cannot salute the flag."?
As much as he advocated for Civil Rights, he would not make himself a prop for President Trump. Robinson had strong opinions and had no problem calling out bigots when he saw them. What he would call Donald Trump, no one knows, but it certainly wouldn't be anything nice considering the things the President has said in the past.
Robinson would do like many black athletes have done and avoid the White House.
