Barry Bonds hit a league-best 762 career home runs, seven NL MVP awards and appeared in 14 All-Star games. On the surface, Bonds is a lock to get his jersey retired, but his use of steroids have stained his legacy. His election into the Hall of Fame has been a struggle because of it. Does he really deserve to have his jersey retired?

Steroids can only get you so far in baseball. You still have to make contact with the ball and Bonds was the best at it. He broke home run record after home run record with incredible hand-eye coordination and timing. Bonds was hitting home runs from the beginning of his career. Steroids didn't help him.

If the Giants want to retire something, they should raise a picture of a needle into the stadium. Bonds may have been hitting home runs, but he was doing so with the benefit of performance-enhancing drugs. If anything should get the credit, it should be the steroids. Bonds built his career on cheating. That shouldn't receive any honor.
