Is marijuana better for athletes than painkillers? | The Tylt
Marijuana has been used to curb pain by those suffering from seizures, arthritis and other joint pain. It stands to reason that athletes, who put so much pressure on their bones and muscles, would also stand to benefit from marijuana use for a higher quality of life. Some athletes already use it in the offseason to recover from the pain. Still, regular painkillers are actually legal, unlike their herbal counterpart and we should expect athletes to obey the law. Which is better? 🌿
Is marijuana better for athletes than painkillers?
NBA players go through a lot of pain when they play in the league. Sometimes, they take painkillers to manage the pain, without knowing the addictive nature of the medications they are taking. Marijuana is non-habit forming and manages pain effectively. Here is former NBA player Al Harrington with more:
When I was playing for the Denver Nuggets, I had a botched knee surgery that I got a staph infection that I ended having to get four more surgeries after that just to clean the infection out. You know, I was on all kinds of pain meds. This lady that runs this university, she seen all the medicine I had on the thing, and she was like, "Al, have you ever tried CBD?". I was just like, "Nah, never really tried." So she gave me a couple things to try and I immediately felt a difference.
Not only are painkillers legal, unlike marijuana, they actually effectively kill pain. Marijuana might dull the senses so that pain isn't as noticeable, but it doesn't do really manage the pain. Here is Joseph Stromberg from Smithsonian Mag with more:
This indicates that marijuana doesn’t function as a pain killer as much as a pain distracter: Objectively, levels of pain remain the same for someone under the influence of THC, but it simply bothers the person less as much as a pain distracter: Objectively, levels of pain remain the same for someone under the influence of THC, but it simply bothers the person less.
Painkillers are still the more effective option for athletes to treat pain. Marijuana is just a distraction.
