Does Lane Kiffin deserve $9.5 million to coach football?
Kiffin took a 3-9 squad from the previous year and transformed them into conference champions, one of the best offenses on the planet, and put the school on the map. If anything, at $950,000 per year, Florida Atlantic University is underpaying Kiffin.
Despite his past, it appears Kiffin's demons have been exorcised. Kiffin has found a place that wants him, with the freedom to run the program how he wants—and without intense scrutinization. With Kiffin at the helm, Florida Atlantic could make it to the College Football Playoff at the pace the team is developing. That makes Kiffin worth all of the money.
Everyone has been seduced by Kiffin's Twitter wars, big talk, and sterling first impression. He's still the same snake oil salesman who will leave a program at the first hint of trouble.
There's a reason Kiffin didn't last long at his dream job at USC. The burden of expectation was too much for him and he choked under the pressure. He left Tennessee after one season, abandoning the players he recruited—so you know he can't honor a commitment.
Kiffin shouldn't be getting an extension. He should be getting walking papers.
