Will LaMelo Ball be a top-3 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft?
LaMelo Ball wasn't expected to shed the stink of his stint in Lithuania or escape the shadow of his father so quickly, but he did and the NBA is taking notice. The youngest Ball's first few games of action have been positive, showing a pro skill set and feel for the game that has impressed many. Here is what a scout had to say to NBA Draft expert Jonathan Givony of ESPN:
He plays with incredible pace. He's never sped up. He's never rattled by anything that's thrown at him. You're expecting something magical to happen every time he has the ball. He sees everything. He can make every pass with either hand off a live dribble. His style of play is tailor-made for the NBA game, especially if you surround him with shooting and better finishers.
If he's able to translate this to the regular season against adults at a professional level, there is no reason to think he won't be a top pick next year.
LaMelo Ball is doing well down under in the NBL, but it's not the NBA. The NBA has the best basketball players in the world and people saying he might be a top-3 pick is taking a huge leap especially after he washed out of Lithuania.
A triple-double is nice, but the Illawarra Hawks are still near the bottom of the league and haven't been winning many games. He isn't playing against top competition at his age and it's not enough to say he's guaranteed to be one of the first players taken in the NBA Draft. He has way too many obstacles to overcome to be a top pick.
