Who will end the 2019-2020 season as Lakers head coach: Frank Vogel or Jason Kidd? | The Tylt
After whiffing on a couple of head coaching candidates, the Los Angeles Lakers finally hired Frank Vogel as head coach to replace Luke Walton. However, they also hired former head coach—and LeBron James mentor—Jason Kidd to be an assistant on his staff. Some feel Vogel has had enough success to at least survive the first year. However, Kidd has a reputation for throwing people under the bus, and many think he will end the season as head coach. What do you think? 🏀
Who will end the 2019-2020 season as Lakers head coach: Frank Vogel or Jason Kidd?
If you don't think Frank Vogel can gain the respect of a team, you haven't been paying attention. He has a winning record in his coaching career and gave the Miami Heat trouble during the Heatles Era with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
It's not like he was dealing with moldable youth at the time, either. He got grizzled veterans like David West, Luis Scola and Danny Granger to buy into what he wanted to do on the court. As much power as LeBron James has in the Lakers organization, Vogel has proven to be a good enough basketball mind to get the King to support his plan, for at least a year.
With all the heat the Lakers have faced this offseason, there is no way they want to make the optics more of a mess than they already are. Vogel will remain the head coach by the end of the 2019-2020 season.
Don't underestimate Jason Kidd's ability to scheme his way to a better job. He's an expert at playing the game—on the court and off of it.
He's already a seasoned coach killer, being linked to Lou Campanelli's departure from Cal and Byron Scott's firing from the New Jersey Nets. This is the same guy that made Lawrence Frank the highest paid assistant in the NBA, only to kick him off the bench after a disagreement. If people think Vogel is going to finish out the season as head coach, they are more naive than Vogel for taking the job in the first place.
Kidd will have an easy time getting LeBron James on his side, who he has mentored in the past. Vogel is already a lame duck coach.
