Is Sam Querrey the best men's tennis player in America?
Sam Querrey's victory over Andy Murray was impressive, but then again, this is nothing new for the University of Southern California alum. At last year's Wimbledon, Querrey defeated world No. 1 Nikola Djokovic in four sets. Querrey is playing his best tennis, and he's only getting better from here.
With top players getting older, Querrey has the perfect opportunity to slide in be the first American to reach No. 1 in the world in tennis since Andy Roddick in 2003. Watch out, Murray. Querrey is coming for that top spot.
Congratulations to Sam Querrey for a fine performance, but this is as far as his hype train goes. Querrey didn't make anything of his victory against Nikola Djokovic last year, and he won't do much of it after Wimbledon. This is not the beginning of some American tennis renaissance. Querrey got lucky, and he should just be happy getting to the semifinals.
Even with stars aging, Querrey isn't even in the same stratosphere with the most talented tennis players in the world. Querrey got a nice win, but he will never be the No. 1 tennis player on the planet.
I think Sam Querrey got very lucky tbh. Andy clearly the better player until the pain got to him. Wd be v. surprised to see Q in the final.
