Is Bobby Bonilla Day genius or ridiculous? | The Tylt
Ah ... Friday is the day that Bobby Bonilla gets a gigantic pile of money while the rest of us are reminded we're broke! Just kidding. Well ... sort of.
Bobby has been retired from the Mets since 2001, but since 2011, he gets paid more than a million dollars every July 1—and will continue to until 2035. The annual payment is part of the buyout deal he established in 2001.
See? Bobby's getting a crap ton of money for a crap ton of years. And now July 1 is known as Bobby Bonilla Day.
Is Bobby Bonilla Day totally genius or ridiculous?
Many fans are impressed with Bobby's deal, and they share their awe every year. Some credit his management team or agent for negotiating such a lucrative deal with the Mets. Others are shocked that such a ridiculous amount of money is going to a retired player. There are Mets players currently playing who don't make as much as Bobby!
That money could go to other players or other causes. But at the same time, you have to respect Bobby and his team's hustle in negotiating the deal—even if the Mets go broke due to the agreement. Joking ... again!

Share it with the people, Bobby!
While Bobby is making bank, some Mets players don't have that kind of dough.
Hope everyone is ready for their yearly reminders of which players on the Mets are making less than Bobby Bonilla!— The Mick (@TheNJMick) July 1, 2016
Bobby Bonilla will get more money from the Mets this year than Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard combined.— Kevin J. Ryan (@wheresKR) July 1, 2016
