Irish golf star Rory McIlroy pulls out of the Rio Olympics. Did he make the right decision? | The Tylt
Irish golf star Rory McIlroy is the latest superstar athlete to pull out of the Rio Olympics. McIlroy stated fears of Zika for the decision, and fan reactions have been mixed. While some support his decision, others are calling him a coward.
Is he just being a cautious family man? Or is he a coward that's letting down fans and Irish pride?
McIlroy explained his decision, according to Golf Digest:
"After speaking with those closest to me, I've come to realize that my health and my family's health comes before anything else. Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take. I trust the Irish people will understand my decision. The unwavering support I receive every time I compete in a golf tournament at home or abroad means the world to me. I will continue to endeavor to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it."
McIlroy isn't the first to drop out the Olympics. Steph Curry and many others won't show either.
The risk of getting Zika is now considered low. Some Irish fans feel let down by McIlroy — calling him a coward and a terrible representative of Irish pride. Furthermore, it is the first time since 1904 that the Olympics featured golf as a sport. McIlroy is missing out on an historic moment for the sport and for Ireland.

Rory McIlroy won't play in Rio over Zika concerns.— Uppity AF! (@xlcomedy) June 22, 2016
1. Well done Rory! The event should relocate.
2. There's golf at the Olympics?
They should cancel this debacle & fire everyone on IOC that gave it to Brazil.— Ra (@Surfpicks) June 22, 2016
I don't blame golfer Rory McIlroy. That place is a cesspool.
Will Rory McIlroy now be dropped from Eamon Dunphy's litany of Irish greats? That is the question.— Kieran Cunningham (@KCsixtyseven) June 22, 2016
So Rory McIlroy is chucking the Olympics? Maybe he should just play indoor putt-putt from now on.— Stevie Nick (no S) (@JackpotNick) June 22, 2016
