Greatest Pittsburgh Penguin of all time: Sidney Crosby or Mario Lemieux?
Like any other sport, success is judged in rings. Guess who has more rings than Mario Lemieux? Sidney Crosby.
Before turning 30 years old, Crosby has established himself as one of the greatest players of all time. Lemieux’s legacy loomed large over Crosby when he was drafted by the Penguins in 2005. In that time, he has brought the city more Stanley Cup championships than Lemieux.
Playing in the same era as Wayne Gretzky, Lemieux let The Great One shoulder the burden of being the face of the league, and faced less media scrutiny. Crosby has faced constant bombardment from both media and fans as the most famous superstar of the NHL, and still performed well on the ice.
Lemieux might have the numbers, but the only number that matters is championships. That’s why he is the greatest Pittsburgh Penguin.
Sidney Crosby accomplished a lot before he turned 30. However, whatever Crosby has done, Lemieux did better. Before his 30th birthday, Lemieux won two Stanley Cups, three Hart Trophies, four Pearson trophies, six Ross trophies. Lemieux didn’t have the benefit being in an era that protected skills players, neither. The Montreal native played in a league that encouraged defenses to hook and grab, and his opponents still couldn’t stop him.
His presence on the ice drew so much attention that his teammates benefited. Some have said that Lemieux could make a club sandwich a 20-goal scorer. That’s value that can’t be measured.
Crosby is an all-time great, but he doesn’t even come close to a man who some people rate above Wayne Gretzky. Lemieux is still the greatest penguin of all time.
