Was Daniel Jones the right choice for the Giants?

The New York Giants are still reeling from the NFL Draft, where they surprised everyone by taking Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick. Many Giants fans took to social media to let their displeasure known, confused as to why the team would take him when Heisman Trophy finalist Dwayne Haskins was available. Others see Jones as a good quarterback in a bad situation at Duke and think he is a diamond in the rough. What do you think? 🏈

Giants fans may look at this pick differently in five years, but right now, it might be one of the biggest reaches and undefendable picks in the history of the franchise.

Daniel Jones finished with a respectable 2,647 passing yards his final season at Duke. Good thing there weren't two Heisman Trophy–level quarterbacks available, right? RIGHT?

Dwayne Haskins, who led the country in total passing yards, and West Virginia star Will Grier were right there for the taking, but instead, the team went with a quarterback who couldn't even dominate an overall weaker conference in the ACC and threw 52 touchdowns in three years. Those numbers would be fine for a quarterback taken in the third round or below, but with a sixth overall pick, you want someone with a more accomplished résumé. The Giants had two players that fit that bill available, but couldn't pull the trigger.

This is a decision the team will regret for years to come.

Jones hasn't yet played a down in the NFL and people are already doubting this kid's ability. The Giants know exactly what they are getting with the former Duke signal caller: an under-the-radar star who will learn under Eli Manning and bring the team to glory when he's ready.

A lot of fans are quick to judge his stats in college without looking at the game tape. He can only do some much with his team consistently failing him. Whether it was a blown protection or receivers dropping balls, Jones was at the mercy of players who couldn't keep up with him. He has incredible touch on his throws and the ability to break the pocket for chunks of yards.

There is no guarantee Jones would've been available at the 17th overall pick where the team had another selection. If the Giants knew Jones was their guy, they had to pick him up as early as possible.

People can discount Jones at their own risk. New York got a good quarterback and the Giants know it.
