Should politicians stay out of sports?

President Donald Trump told "Fox and Friends" he likes the new NFL policy forcing players on the field to stand for the national anthem, and says those who don't shouldn't be playing and maybe "shouldn't be in the country." Policymakers run the country and that includes professional sports. Politicians have every right to oversee athletics when it's necessary. Still, Trump comes off as an attention seeker, and there are bigger concerns than players peacefully protesting. What do you think? 🏈

If players have the right to protest, politicians have the right to step in and comment on sports. President Trump was asked a question and he answered it. There is nothing wrong with a politician stepping into sports. They are the policymakers in every aspect of American life, after all.

Sometimes the government stepping in isn't so bad. No one complained when George W. Bush took the time to comment on performance-enhancing drugs. Politicians don't have to stick to politics.

Government officials are always looked at as the bad guys, but they can intervene in situations to save the day. When Major League Baseball was embroiled in a steroid controversy, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held an 11-hour hearing to pressure the league into changing its performance-enhancing drug policy. What came out of it was a safer game the public could gain trust in again. Political intervention can help sports.

Trump is at it again. It's not enough that he invades every part of our life, now he's involved in something he obviously has no idea about. At a political rally last year, he told to his supporters, "Wouldn’t you love to see one of these N.F.L. owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired.'” How the hell does that help?

Because of the president's stance on the NFL protests, he is throwing fuel on a fire that didn't need his interjection. Now, the league changed its national anthem policy to force athletes to stand for the national anthem, instead of doing it of their own free will. Politicians make everything worse.

Remember when Tom Brady was accused of deflating footballs, and the government thought it was necessary to hold hearings? Seems like a bit of overkill, especially considering the issues the country was facing in 2015. Again, this was because a guy deflated a football, not for killing anyone or defrauding millions of people.

Politicians really need to get their priorities straight. Leave sports alone until you solve actual problems.
