Should President Trump pull the U.S. out of the Winter Olympics?
The United States' relationship with North Korea has been strained, and no one knows what kind of stunt they will pull with the world watching the Olympics. While America's athletes have worked really hard to get to the games, their safety is paramount to everything else.
The Munich massacre at the 1972 games still haunts the Olympics, and President Donald Trump should prevent an international incident from happening. He should keep the United States' athletes safe by keeping them at home.
France is also concerned over security also has them leaving their attendance at the Olympics up in the air. If other countries are doubting their own commitment to the games, maybe the United States should just stay home.
These athletes spend years, even entire lifetimes, trying to get to the Olympics. To deny them that dream would be callous. These athletes give their blood, sweat, and tears in pursuit of an Olympic medal. They sacrifice relationships and normal lives to realize a dream. The president shouldn't deny them that over a paranoid notion that North Korea will try anything at the games.
The United States can't give in to fear. They need to show no fear and send their best athletes to the Olympics in February.
Keeping the United States out of the Olympics will go against what the games were supposed to do—unite the world.
The Olympics are a place where nations come together to appreciate the best parts of one another. If the Americans keep their athletes away, the United States will perpetuate their arrogant reputation, and deny the games a chance to show how the Olympics can transcend borders to create new friendships. American athletes need to be in Pyeongchang.
