Did the Philadelphia Eagles make the right move by cutting Ryan Mathews?

Running back Ryan Mathews was cut from the Philadelphia Eagles after two years playing with the team. Cutting the often-injured running back saves the team $4 million, and a lot of headaches—a move needed to happen. Ryan Mathews ran with passion when he lined up in the Eagles' backfield. However, passion can only get you so far without results. Mathews was productive when he was on the field, but he was never able to stay healthy enough to make a lasting impact on the team. He was also never able to solve his fumble problems, which cost Philadelphia a game last year.

With the Eagles shedding payroll to add salary cap space and adding running back LeGarrette Blount, Mathews was a prime candidate to be released when he was deemed healthy.

Mathews was a model citizen, and a good running back during his short stint. However, it was time for both parties to move on.

The Philadelphia Eagles were deep at the running back position with three talented players with three different skill sets. As much as the Eagles want to add cap space, cutting Mathews was a mistake. As good as LeGarrette Blount is, he is more effective running out of power formations, and not out of the Eagles preferred shotgun formation.

Mathews gave the Eagles a versatile running back who had two years under his belt with the team. The running back position could have been one of Philadelphia's biggest strengths. Without Mathews, it is uncertain whether that assessment holds up.
