Here are the lowlights from James Harden in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinal.

Harden has no excuse for losing this game. Not only were the Rockets at home, the Spurs were without their best player and defender in Kawahi Leonard. Harden is one of the most most difficult players in the league to guard against, and yet he didn’t attempt a shot until around midway through the second quarter. Even when Harden started shooting, he didn’t aggressively go to the basket like he usually does, choosing to hover around the three-point line.

His passes were often lazy, and the Spurs capitalized by picking them off for easy baskets. Harden showed little to fight as he finished the game shooting 2-for-11, scoring 10 points, turning the ball over six times and fouling out. There’s having a bad game, and then there’s not even trying. Harden gave up.

Bad games happen. That’s sports. The game plan may have been for Harden to be a distributor early in the game, and then take over later. The shots just weren’t falling for the Rockets at the start of the game, and the team never recovered. Harden may also have suffered a concussion during Game 5, explaining his poor performance.

After the game, Harden cited rhythm issues as the cause for the blowout loss. Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said Harden was fighting a cold, and that he was proud to be his coach. He could’ve just said “no comment” but D’Antoni went out of his say to he was proud. Coaches at the professional level don’t tend to throw that out often.

Harden is one of the best players in the league, but he isn’t invincible. He’s been great for the entire season. One bad game shouldn’t define him as a quitter.
