Ward was definitely in struggle-mode those first few rounds, but he pulled it together. The judges chose him as the champion after he made his grand return in the match against Kovalev on Nov. 19.
But some Kovalev fa s showed their support. They argue Ward's win was unfair and political. After all—the judges were American and the fight was in America.
The New York Times reported:
“This was a beautiful thing,” Ward said after Saturday’s decision, which allowed him to take the W.B.O., W.B.A. and I.B.F. light heavyweight titles from Kovalev. “We did it, baby. It’s a lot of hardware. Surreal.”
Kovalev wants a rematch—saying "I'll kick his ass."
