Who’s the greatest Penguin of all times: Sidney Crosby or Mario Lemieux?

Penguins are typically jovial creatures. Unless you’re talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins, which spend the majority of their time shelling out dirty hits and licking other players’ faces. Nevertheless, there’s no denying the Penguins have produced many a star player. There’s number 87, Sidney Crosby, who remains one of the best centers in the league. Then there’s Mario Lemieux, whose career rightly earned him the nickname “Le Magnifique." Who's the more legendary Penguin?

Sid the Kid was signed as a first overall pick for the Penguins in 2005, launching a career that would list him as one of the top 100 players in NHL history. His 14 years on the ice has seen him partake in three Stanley Cup playoffs (all of which they won); receive two Olympic gold medals; and rack up a total of 446 goals over 943 games played. Not bad for someone who just turned 32.

In the non-professional sense, good ol’ Sidney has a bit of a, shall we say, challenging persona. He’s certainly not afraid to play dirty and has been known on occasion to repeatedly knock people’s heads against the ice. He also has a penchant for crotch shots, not a required skill for a pro-NHL player, but a useful tactic nonetheless.

Regardless, there’s no denying Crosby’s raw talent. Pittsburgh fans beam with pride any time he slides on to the ice, finding comfort in the fact that, no matter how the game turns out, it’s sure to be a game incredibly well played.

Mario Lemieux is “Le Magnifique” for a good reason. Over the course of his career, Lemieux obtained over 1,723 and ended up becoming one of the sport’s most beloved players. He even came back strong in the 1992-93 season after battling with cancer, most likely throwing his gloves off before beating the crap out of it himself.

Many maintain Lemieux was the greatest hockey player ever, topping chiclet-spitting god, Gretzky. Outside of his offensive talents, Lemieux is the only player to this day to score short-handed, even-strength, power play, penalty shot, and empty net goals all in a single game. Is that a hat trick? Nah. More like, a taking-off-all-your-clothes-and-throwing-them-on-the-ice trick.

Today Lemieux remains one of the proud owners of the franchise. His legacy is still consistently discussed among sports enthusiasts, and even got him a mention in a track by A Tribe Called Quest. And he’s done so all without ever brushing his tongue up against an opponent, ever.
