Anyone who watches the Dallas Cowboys knows everything they do revolves around their star running back. The two times he has played 15 regular season games, he has led the NFL in rushing yards. That kind of production is worthy of a gigantic contract.

Not only does he drive the team at running back, Elliott makes quarterback Dak Prescott a lot better. According to ESPN, Prescott throws 30 percent more accurate with Elliott on the field because he demands that kind of respect from the defense.

The former Ohio State running back is demanding a contract larger than Los Angeles Rams back Todd Gurley's record-breaking deal. If they know what's good for them, the Cowboys should pony up.

The Cowboys needed a rushing champion to win the Super Bowl in the 90s because that was the way the NFL was played during that era. In the current NFL, running backs aren't nearly as important with how much the ball flies through the air. In Ezekiel Elliott's case, he is talented but definitely not worth the hefty price tag he's asking for.

According to FiveThirtyEight, there are a couple of statistics that don't paint Elliott as a particularly effective back in key situations. He is 16th among running backs in red-zone efficiency and 10th in short-yardage efficiency.

He may gobble up yards by the end of the season, but he's not as dependable in situations that matter when the game is on the line. He might not like it, but he's a risk that's not worth the price.
