When heroes are faced with adversity, they don't run or stay silent. Heroes tell the truth when no one else will. That is what Colin Kaepernick is doing. No one wants to talk about the violence and discrimination people of color face in this country, so Kaepernick used the NFL's massive platform to reach millions of Americans.

He made a righteous political stand, in an industry that silences athletes for the slightest political statement, knowing he made have ended his career by doing so. That kind of sacrifice should be commended and honored. It isn't un-American or unpatriotic—but quite the opposite. He is upholding the American values of peaceful protest and freedom of speech. He has also put his money where his mouth is, donating a million dollars to charities to that help solve the multitude of problems facing local communities. He also was named GQ's Citizen of the Year.

Criticizing a country doesn't mean you hate it. It means you love it so much you want to improve it for everyone. Kaepernick is a true hero.

But many see what Colin Kaepernick is doing as the polar opposite of heroic. He is spitting in the face of real heroes every time he opens his mouth. Servicemen and servicewomen make the ultimate sacrifice by putting their lives on the line defending our freedom. They are the real heroes. The national anthem and American flag represent that sacrifice, and every time a player kneels when the "Star Spangled Banner" plays, it is disrespectful to the highest degree.

Multiple polls show a majority of Americans disagree with Kaepernick, and everything that he's done. He's paid tribute to a communist dictator, and generalized all police officers as "pigs." That doesn't sound like the actions of a hero.
