Who won the Blake Griffin trade: Clippers or Pistons?

The Los Angeles Clippers traded all-star forward Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons for Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, and Boban Marjanovic last season. While the Clippers gave up an all-star, they also received draft picks for both last year's and this year's draft, and now have a team in playoff position at the time of publishing. Still, the Pistons got Griffin, who works well Andre Drummond, and could make a legitimate run to the playoffs. Who won the trade? 🏀

The Los Angeles Clippers signed Blake Griffin to a five-year, $171-million contract before the 2017-2018 season, a mistake they rightfully corrected with this trade. Griffin is not the franchise player he is purported to be. He is not a cornerstone that a team can build around and win a championship with, but he is really good as a second option. So instead of waiting out five years for the contract to expire without a championship, they traded him. Smart.

The Clippers got players whose contracts either expire last year or this season, one 2018 first-round draft pick, and one 2019 second-round draft pick. That freed up payroll to make free agent signings for the next two years, and now Los Angeles has pieces to make trades to improve the team.

Los Angeles is in playoff position and the Clippers have the flexibility to build a team that can compete for titles in the future. Los Angeles won this trade.

The Pistons are going places and Blake Griffin is going to take them there. The five-time NBA All-Star brings a skillset that is a perfect fit with Detroit. He can handle the ball as a power forward, post up, pass and shoot. He can do just about anything on the court and the Pistons will appreciate that versatility as they make a playoff run.

Both Griffin and Andre Drummond are adept passers who play off each other well. Griffin can make moves from the perimeter and post, while Drummond operates under the basket cleaning up anything he misses. The Pistons are still on the bubble for a playoff spot at the time of publication, but are ready to take the next step in their development with Griffin. Detroit won the trade.
