Tim Tebow hit a home run in his first minor league at-bat playing for the Columbia Fireflies, the Class A minor league affiliate for the New York Mets. He's hoping to make it in baseball after failing in the NFL. Tebow is a polarizing figure in sports, and many pundits believe his ego exceeds his talent. Critics say he's not good enough to make it in the big leagues; this is just a marketing ploy. But the Mets' hitting coach says Tebow is a gifted athlete who has what it takes to go proWhat do you think?

Tebow knocked it out of the park, literally, in his first minor league at-bat. It was something of an auspicious start to a baseball career many sports analysts view with skepticism. Tebow ended the night going 1-for-5 with two RBIs.

But let's not get carried away, Class-A baseball is still one of the lowest levels of minor league ball. It's a far cry from facing a polished major league pitcher who can throw 95 mph with pinpoint accuracy. Tebow will have to prove himself. Does he have what it takes to go pro?

But let's be real. Honest baseball scouts have almost zero confidence in Tebow to make a big league roster. At 29-years-old, he's approaching the age where many scouts think a player's skills are set or starting to decline. Tebow hit just .148 with eight strikeouts in spring training and has a terrible swing. Not terribly encouraging.

This is about selling tickets. Mets manager Terry Collins said as much back in March:

"I don't think he's going to make our team, but I think it's great for our organization, it's great for our fans. He's a pretty famous guy."

Tim Tebow has been proving the haters wrong for his entire athletic career. He doesn't let the criticism faze his game. He's a baller, pure and simple. He knows how to win. And when you give him a shot, Tebow carries his teammates to success every time.

And let's not dismiss the fact that Tebow is a gifted athletic specimen with real physical skills. And it's not just fans who think so, the Mets hitting coach also thinks so. He has no dog in this race, he's just telling it like it is—Tebow is a gifted athlete who can make the big leagues if he keeps at it.

"I tell you what, with his work — the guy is just a machine. He’s 260, 7 percent body fat. He’s 6-4. He’s put together like no athlete I’ve ever seen. His work ethic is off the charts... We’ll see how that ends up. But yeah, I don’t count out the fact that maybe at some point, he can break through into the major leagues.”
