Best athlete of 2017 so far: Kevin Durant or Cristiano Ronaldo?
The Golden State Warriors might be a “Super Team,” but they are definitely led by a superstar. Kevin Durant caught a lot of heat for leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder to play with three other All-Stars, but now he can wave a championship ring in the faces of his detractors. And he didn’t take a back seat, neither. He made the team his own.
During the NBA Finals, Durant won MVP honors, averaging 35.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists. His efficient play against LeBron James, the supposed best player in the NBA, had pundits proclaiming Durant took that title after he dismantled the Cleveland Cavaliers. No one has had a better year than Durant so far.
Ronaldo has already had a legendary career, but 2017 might have been his best. His perfect hat trick against Bayern Munich made him the first 100-goal scorer in Champions League history. He followed that effort with another hat trick against Athletico Madrid in the next Champions League matchup, making him the first 50-goal scorer in the knock out stage of the competition. With Ronaldo leading the way, Real Madrid became the first back-to-back Champions League winner since A.C. Milan won in 1989 and 1999.
He also led the team to their third La Liga title in four years. During the campaign, he overtook Jimmy Greaves for the most career goals in the top five European Leagues. Durant had a good year, Ronaldo had a great one.
